Ways to Give

Children’s offers comprehensive transplant care to patients with end-stage diseases of the heart, liver, intestine and kidneys — truly providing these children with a second chance to live active, healthy lives.

Prior to transplant, patients and families in the Transplant Center receive specialized treatment and thorough education as well as emotional and financial support.

Once a child receives a transplant, the journey toward a new life continues. In addition to frequent clinic visits where Children’s specialists monitor the child’s progress, families must watch for signs of infection or organ rejection and administer anti-rejection medications at home.

Transplant physicians and surgeons are continually working to improve transplant outcomes by advancing diagnostic and treatment methods through research. Having achieved significant improvements in survival rates after transplantation of all organs in children, physician-scientists are now focusing on improving their quality of life.

We are currently focusing our research efforts on achieving transplant tolerance—minimizing the use of immuno-suppression medications after transplant while guarding against the possibility of organ rejection.

The initial research to reduce the use of immuno-suppression medications has shown promising results. However, more research is needed so we can successfully reduce the side effects of anti-rejection medication and offer children a better quality of life.
